1. Purpose and Scope
The Yeditepe Biennial aims to bridge the deep-rooted heritage of our traditional arts with a contemporary vision and to establish a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue within the framework of the determined main theme. These specifications set forth the legal, technical, and administrative principles regarding the application, evaluation, production, and exhibition processes of traditional art practices and site-specific installation projects to be showcased within the scope of the Biennial. Every artist applying to the Biennial is deemed to have accepted all conditions contained herein in advance.
2. Application Requirements and Submission Materials
To be considered valid, candidates must submit a comprehensive project proposal including the following main sections:
- Title and Concept of the Work: The title of the project must be clearly stated; the conceptual connection between the work and the Biennial theme, as well as the nature of the dialogue established with the theme, must be explained.
- Spatial Configuration and Technical Requirements: Materials and techniques to be used in the production of the work must be detailed. Requirements for the exhibition space and technical infrastructure (dimensions/measurements, sound, lighting, power requirements, mounting/hanging mechanisms, etc.) must be provided with concrete data.
- Artist Statement and Motivation: The relevance of the proposed project to the artist’s own artistic practice and the specific motivation for participating in the Yeditepe Biennial must be justified.
3. Application Guidelines
To ensure a fair and efficient evaluation by the Selection Committee, artists must adhere to the following criteria:
- Word Count: The project description must not exceed 500 words.
- Language and Clarity: The work or project concept must be expressed in clear, concise, and unambiguous language, free from speculation.
- Focus: Instead of providing lengthy narratives about the artist's personal history, general artistic philosophy, or previous works, the proposal should focus directly on the nature and originality of the project.
- Concreteness: Materials, techniques, exact dimensions, and exhibition methods must be specified clearly, leaving no room for ambiguity.
- Style: The language used in the application is expected to be simple, clear, and concrete.
Important Note: The Biennial aims to highlight the fresh connection established between traditional arts and the contemporary world. Accordingly, the proposed project must not have been previously exhibited or published in any public space, commercial gallery, museum, print media, or digital platform, including social media.
4. Evaluation Criteria and Curatorial Process
The Evaluation Committee will review applications based on the following fundamental criteria:
- Originality: The innovation and uniqueness of the artistic concept and its ability to bring a novel perspective to traditional arts.
- Feasibility: The potential for the project to be physically executed within the specified schedule and budget.
- Thematic Relevance: The strength of the dialogue the project establishes with the main theme of the Yeditepe Biennial.
- Technical Proficiency: The artist’s possession of the necessary technical infrastructure and material knowledge to realize the project.
- Spatial Compatibility: The physical and aesthetic harmony of the installations with the Biennial’s exhibition venues.
- Curatorial Strategy and Display: To maintain the Biennial’s cohesive narrative and the aesthetic/conceptual flow between venues, the curatorial team holds final authority over the exact exhibition location, lighting, and layout of the accepted works, while respecting the architectural dynamics of the site. The artist agrees to work in full cooperation with the curatorial team during the installation phase.
Important Note: Vague, incomplete, or excessively brief descriptions, as well as those containing irrelevant details, may negatively impact the evaluation process. The committee may request additional information, sketches, mock-ups, or visuals from the applicant if deemed necessary.
